Each 365-day count, countries of the world celebrate Earth Day on the 22nd of April as a way to appreciate and promote the earth’s natural environment.
What is Earth Day?
Earth day was identified and set up by a U.S. Senator, Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970. Gaylord’s nervousness from frequent environmental crisis led him to recognize this day and he went ahead to create awareness in Philadelphia starting from April 16 through April 22 with no official body governing it. His consistency and dedication brought about what we call the ‘Earth Day’ today.
Gaylord has taught us about the environment, here are ways we as individuals can celebrate Earth Day:
• Eat organic foods: Eating organic foods helps your health by not digesting preservatives and chemicals. The old saying ‘you are what you eat’ has never been a laughing matter when given a good thought; be aware of what is in your food products and take good stand against herbicides and pesticides sprayed on food crops. A good practice in this regard is to eat fresh fruits and vegetables of Earth Day. You might end up liking what you eat and then make every day an Earth day – who knows? Also, you can grow your own garden if you desire it.
• Conserve water: Using less water when taking a shower will reduce water usage as well as help you to save on your bills. On Average, 30% of energy use comes from heating water. Water usage can be reduced by instating a low-flow head to your shower unit. Try collecting rain water for watering your garden and yard – this gives your vegetation natural green water.
• Bike, Walk, Transit: You really have no need to drive three blocks to the market, do you? Stretch your muscles by walking down to the market and enjoy a moment of meeting new people along the way. For a farther distance, you can take a bike or use transit.
• Use green cleaning products: One way to help the planet is by purchasing eco-friendly cleaning products. Most green cleaning products can be found on supermarket shelves so they are not really difficult to find. If it is good for the environment, it is also good for your health.
• Hang your clothes on the line: The smell of fresh laundry coming off the line is always pleasant. You can save energy by spreading your clothes outside and enjoy the simplified life.
• Plant Trees: Let’s plant a few trees in place of those that have been cut down. Trees help us breathe!
• Recycle: Try recycling a few things around you for more useful purposes. After all, recycling has become an easy task these days.
There are several other things you can do on Earth Day but do remember that we celebrate this day to appreciate the Earth. The more cooperative we become, the happier and healthier we will be.
What difference are you going to make on Earth Day?
